Italian Crew Questioned in Shooting Deaths of Two Indian Fishermen

Indian police and coastguard authorities are questioning the crew of an Italian oil tanker after shots fired from their ship killed two Indian fishermen.

According to police reports, the armed guards onboard the tanker mistook the Indian fishing boat for a pirate vessel. Indian officials claim that the fishermen did nothing to pose a threat to the cargo ship or its crew.

As stricter sanctions from the European Union (EU) are pressuring Tehran to abandon its nuclear program, they also threaten to force Iran’s flagship cargo shipping line out of Europe. Past efforts have failed to accomplish this task.

2 Killed Onboard Cargo Ship During Pirate Attack Off Nigeria

Pirates off the coast of Nigeria have attacked a cargo ship and have killed its captain and chief engineer during the assault. Officials and the maritime community have a growing concern that these waters are becoming increasingly dangerous for shippers. The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) also reports another ship attack and a tanker hijacking in the area within the last four days.

At least four Balkan nations along the Danube River have suspended shipping due to severe frost and massive ice that is blocking the popular waterway. Hundreds of Cruise Ship Passengers Infected by Norovirus Outbreak

With another challenge facing the world’s biggest cruise company, a cruise ship operated by Carnival Corp. now has more than 100 people onboard that have fallen ill with a stomach virus. Over 200 Rescued From Sunken Ferry Near Papua New Guinea

The 22-year-old Japanese-built MV Rabaul Queen ferry has sunk northeast of Papua New Guinea’s mainland. Authorities report that about 200 of the 350 passengers that were on board have been rescued. There were also 12 crew members aboard the ship.

PNG’s National Maritime Safety Authority has lifted between 198 and 219 survivors of the ferry accident onto six international merchant ships that have been instructed by Australian authorities to aid the passengers. French Company Working on 'Ship of the Future' to Aid in the Battle on Piracy

A French military vessel, dubbed The Ship of the Future, is a new project that will be taking aim at pirates. As there were over 400 reported pirate attacks and armed robberies at sea in 2011, the new ship is equipped with a barrage of non-lethal defense technologies that will provide security in the water. Costa Concordia Update: Compensation Deal Reached For Uninjured Passengers, Salvage Work Continues

Costa Crociere has offered uninjured passengers that were onboard the Costa Concordia $14,460 each to compensate for baggage, personal belongings, and psychological trauma after their cruise ship ran aground and capsized off Italy. Some passengers have already refused the deal; they feel that a price cannot yet be put on what they suffered. They are free to pursue their own legal actions if unhappy with the deal.

US Special Forces Rescue Hostages From Somali Pirate Gang

United States Special Forces have rescued an American and a Danish hostage from Somalia after a shootout with pirates. This mission is an example of a rare raid into the Horn of Africa to free foreign captives. Aid workers, Jessica Buchanan and Poul Hagen Thisted, were kidnapped back in October in the Galmudug region, while working for the Danish De-mining Group (DDG). The FBI was also involved in the rescue.
