A press release has revealed that the Coast Guard has responded to an incident where a Coast Guard cutter and ferry carrying 257 passengers and eight crew collided approximately three miles north of Block Island, RI, around 1215 hours of Wednesday, 2 July.

Latest Shipping Confidence Survey by Moore Stephens has revealed that overall confidence in the market for the next twelve months remains unaffected by the global credit crunch. But two-thirds of shipping interests expect finance costs to rise and there has also been a fall in the number of owners who expect to make a major business investment in the next twelve months.

The IMO Council completed its landmark 100th session on Friday, 20 June, following a week which also saw a series of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the IMO Convention; the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of that Convention; the return of the IMO Secretariat to its refurbished Albert Embankment Headquarters; and the 25th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the World Maritime University (WMU) and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI).
