Chilean Port Workers Protest Over Radioactive Cars Arriving from Japan

The Associated Press reports that customs officials in Chile have detected radiation in cars that arrived from Japan onboard the Hyundai 106 cargo ship.

Twenty-one of the 2,500 cars that arrived in Iquique, Chile from the Japanese port of Yokohama have been found to have low levels of radiation.

Nearly one hundred port workers have protested the arrival of the shipment and subsequent exposure, claiming their health was at risk.

Chile’s nuclear commission confirmed that the levels of radiation found on the cars were too low to cause damage to humans. Officials say the cars will be washed while they're on the ship to keep any radiation onboard.

Four Pirates Killed During Release of Singapore Flagged Bulk Carrier

On May 1, pirates received a ransom for the release of the Singapore flagged MV SINAR KUDUS. Pirates had been holding the vessel and crew since March 16.

After the ransom payment, reported by pirates to be $4.5 million, was made, the crew and vessel were safely released and the 35 pirates onboard left the ship. The Indonesian military says the final four pirates took off in a speedboat. The military Special Forces pursued the speedboat, shooting and killing the four pirates.

The Indonesian military says the attack was planned and that they made sure to wait to engage until after all 20 Indonesian crewmembers were out of harms way.

The MV SINAR KUDUS set sail to the nearest secure port guarded along the way by Indonesian warships. The ship owner said that the ship will undergo maintenance, receive a new crew, and continue to Rotterdam with its cargo of ferro nickel worth...

China Stepping Up Enforcement to Meet Increasing Maritime Claims

China’s Marine Surveillance says they will add 1,000 officers this year, raising staff to a total of 10,000. The hiring spike comes after increased maritime claims and rising territory and maritime border disputes involving China and neighboring countries.

In recent months China has had disputes over the Spratly Islands that are claimed by Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. China also has had disputes with Taiwan and Vietnam over the Paracels, a smaller island group that the three nations claim as their territory.

Last year China and Japan were involved in a heated dispute after a Chinese fishing boat rammed a Japanese patrol boat after the patrol boat order the fishing vessel to vacate...

Physics for Safe Ports

A study release from Duke University:

New technology uses nuclear 'fingerprints' to scan cargo ships

(Photo, thumb above). The Port of Savannah is the fourth largest container port in the United States, importing hundreds of large metal boxes from cargo ships shown here. Credit: Georgia Department of Economic Development.

While 700 million travelers undergo TSA's intrusive scans and pat-downs each year, 11 million cargo containers enter American ports with little screening at all. And the volume of those containers, roughly equivalent to 590 Empire State Buildings of cargo, could contain something even worse than box knives or exploding shoes, namely nuclear weapons.

Two teams of North Carolina physicists are mapping the intricacies of the atomic nucleus, which could provide better security at the ports. The scientists have...

SCI’s Seafarers’ Center offers business services and recreation facilities for transportation workers, providing access to the Internet, telephones, lounges, and food services.

Support for NEVA 2011, the international maritime conference and exhibition taking place in St. Petersburg between September 20th and 23rd this year, has gathered momentum both within Russia and internationally in recent weeks. The event, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is increasingly being viewed within Russia as not simply a niche maritime exhibition, but as a global business-to-business event. As a result it is being backed by the domestic business community at the highest level.

This is reflected in official support for NEVA 2011 for the first time from both the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE) and the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr A N...
