Greek Ship Owner Pleads Guilty To Pollution In Texas

Greek-based ship management company, Noka Shipping, has been sentenced to pay a total of $900,000 in penalties after pleading guilty to concealing pollution discharges from a cargo ship that docked in two Texan ports last year.

Noka had also failed to notify the Coast Guard of the safety hazards present aboard the 29,414 ton cargo ship, M/V Florin, not properly maintaining an oil record book which did not report excessive amounts of oil in ship machinery, oil leaks in the main engine and generator, oil present in the fire suppression system, and an authorized oil drainage system for the engine room.

According to a news release from Noka, from June 15th, 2010 to September 27th 2010, senior engineering officials overlooked pollution prevention equipment and discharged the oily waste directly into the ocean.  During this period, the Florin visited the Corpus...

World Oceans Day 2011

“Our oceans: Greening Our Future”

World Oceans Day has been celebrated on June 8th since its proposal at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil.  Although it has been unofficially celebrated since 1992, it was only in 2008 that the United Nations recognized the day dedicated to the honor, integrity, and importance of our oceans.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on all governments and people around the world to the play their part in ensuring the protection of oceans for the future generations.  He released a statement in which he outlined the severe challenges today’s oceans face, from depleted fishery resources, the impacts of climate change, deterioration of the marine environment, the decreasing labor conditions for seafarers, and what he referred to as an...

Environmentalists Fight for Decreased Speed Limits to Protect Whales

On Monday, a petition was filed by four environmental groups to the U.S. Department of Commerce to instate a 10-knot speed limit for large commercial ships in four of California’s National Marine Sanctuaries in the Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank, spanning over 8,000 square miles of ocean.

Currently freighters will travel through the environmentally rich areas at twice that speed, at around 20 knots or 23 miles per hour.  The petition cites the danger these speeds impose upon vulnerable marine mammals, in particularly whales.  Director at the Center for Biological Diversity, Miyoko Sakashita, said that these marine sanctuaries should be a safe harbor for marine life, but instead they are at high risk for being slammed and run over by commercial vessels.

Since the protected waters also serve...

Are Weapons the Answer To Counter Ship Piracy? Pt. 2

Written by:  Andrew Kain, CEO and Ric Filon, Director Maritime Services, AKE Ltd

... Part 1 of "Are Weapons the Answer To Counter Ship Piracy?" can be found here

Weapons and effects

Hollywood and the media have greatly exaggerated the destructive power of such weapons as the RPG7, while the AK47 has an iconic status. The RPG7 is a rocket propelled grenade, with very limited capability and effect. The AK47 is a superb close quarter battle weapon, ideal for insurgents, pirates and many others, because of its simplicity and functionality. However, it is a very inaccurate weapon, with little penetration capability. Both can, and do, create a situation of panic and fear in those with no...

Jobs Await Maritime Academies' Class of 2011!

Nearly 800 young men and women are graduating from the seven maritime academies in the United States this year, and many will be working on a vessel almost before the ink on their U.S. Coast Guard license is dry.  U.S.-flag vessel operators are clamoring for qualified deck and engine officers, so the class of 2011 will soon be gainfully employed.

“We welcome our new shipmates,” said James Henry, President of the Transportation Institute, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Maritime Partnership.  “It is no small accomplishment to pass the extensive U.S. Coast Guard exam required for a deck or engine license.  Now it’s time to put that knowledge to work moving the cargos that keep America strong and safe.”

There are seven maritime academies in the United States, one each in California, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan and...

Offshore Services 150 Ton Azimuthing Thruster Exchange

Subsea Solutions Alliance says, "The bigger the better!"

The exchange of underwater demountable thrusters in itself is typically not a challenging process. A step-by-step process is developed over months of dialog between the vessels owners and equipment manufacturers. As the units are specifically designed for underwater demounting, it minimizes the amount of in-water processes required. However, when thrusters get to be this big, the consequences of your actions become all the more critical and that is why major offshore drilling operators rely on the consistently reliable service from the diver / technicians of the Subsea Solutions Alliance. With top notch equipment approved for use on these types of projects, documentation and safety manuals compliant with offshore and operator requirements, and skilled diver / technicians familiar with the construction and exchange process of thrusters, the...
