Houston Ship Channel Closed After Barge Collides with Tower

The US Coast Guard has closed a 4-mile stretch of the Houston Ship Channel, after a barge collided with a tower supporting a high-voltage electric transmission line.

The Coast Guard reports that T/V SAFETY QUEST was pushing three barges loaded with scrap metal around 6 a.m. Sunday morning, when it crashed into electrical tower 197 in Baytown. The tower remains upright, resting on one of the barges.

The crew from the AEP River Operations owned tug was unharmed and was moved to safety. Drug and alcohol testing is being conducted.

He was covering them when Marine Corporal Jason Dunham, 22, threw his helmet and himself on a live grenade in April 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Karabilah, Iraq, sustaining massive injuries that took his life eight days later. Admiral Thad W. Allen to Join Rand as Senior Fellow

Adm. Thad W. Allen announced today that after completing his service as national incident commander of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, he will join the RAND Corporation as a senior fellow, effective Oct. 4.

“Thad Allen has served the U.S. government and U.S. Coast Guard with great distinction,” said RAND President and CEO James A. Thomson. “We are delighted he will continue to take on the most difficult policy challenges as a RAND senior fellow. The United States filed a civil complaint today against Coltec Industries Inc., a subsidiary of EnPro Industries Inc., and the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp. The complaint was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia under the Clean Air Act and the marine diesel engine rules issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Justice Department and EPA announced.

Cleveland Ship Bids for Northrop Grumman’s Shipbuilding Unit

Cleveland Ship LLC says it made an offer for Northrop Grumman’s entire shipbuilding division on September 23.

The amount of the bid was not released, but according to Bloomberg, the ship division could be worth as much as $4.6 billion.

The 153-page bid includes the Newport News shipyard, employing 20,000 along with two other major yards in Pascagoula, Miss. and Avondale, LA. The deal, if accepted would also include two subsidiaries, AMSEC LLC in Virginia Beach and a San Diego repair facility, Continental Maritime.

Ninth Day of Strikes at French Port

For the ninth day straight, two French Mediterranean oil terminals were blocked, and several tankers and other vessels wait offshore of France’s top oil port.

The strike is slowing production at refineries, who could run out of crude by the end of the week.

The strike by CGT union at Fos-sur-Mer and Lavera terminals began September 27, after a proposed port reform to privatize unloading operations at docks previously run by the state.

A wealthy Manhattan couple was thrown off a cruise after a dinnertime argument with another passenger.

The luxurious Queen Mary 2 from England was on a 30-day, $20,000 cruise to Canada, England and the Mediterranean in September, with Gloria Sher, 82 and her husband Fredrick Evans, 91, onboard.

Wärtsilä CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co Ltd will invest EUR 12 million in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Inauguration of the new factory and the first deliveries of propellers, are planned for the second quarter 2011.

Odfjell Terminates Shipbuilding Contracts in China

In January 2008, Odfjell entered into shipbuilding contracts with Chongqing Chuandong Shipbuilding Industry China (CCSIC), for construction of six stainless steel chemical tankers of 9,000 dwt for delivery between the 4th quarter of 2010 and the 1st quarter of 2012.

The parties have today agreed to terminate three of the contracts. Under the termination agreements Odfjell will receive USD 30 million, after repayment of bank loan associated with the three canceled newbuildings.

The remaining three vessels will be built at CCSIC, and estimated date of delivery is between December 2011 and April 2012. These tankers will replace smaller owned vessels trading by Odfjell in the Asia Region.

Moose Boats, a designer and builder of aluminum, power catamarans, recently delivered a fully equipped M2-35 for law enforcement, firefighting, and EMS response to Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The vessel will be stationed in Deale, MD just south of Annapolis harbor. It was put into service in August and provides multiple levels of response for the extensive shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay surroundings of Annapolis.
