New Zealand Sends Air Force & Navy to Protect Oil Survey Ship

The New Zealand government has called on the navy and air force to assist local police in monitoring a Greenpeace protest of a research ship searching for natural gas off New Zealand’s East Cape.

Greenpeace protestors along with protestors from the local organization iwi Whanaua Apanui are protesting drilling for oil and gas in New Zealand’s waters.

The Singapore based oil survey ship Orient Explorer is conducting the first seismic study of the area since Brazil’s Petrobras was awarded an $118 million five-year permit last June. The oil company is hoping to find liquefied natural gas in the 12,000 square kilometer area. The government has granted Petrobras the right to drill one well.

Lobby groups have warned New Zealand that if they don’t help with warding off protesters they’ll been seen as a less attractive option for petroleum exploration, which could cause the...

Video: Additional Munitions Discovered Under Seattle Cruise Ship Terminal

Last October it was first reported that munitions were discovered during a routine security dive, at Seattle Pier 91 cruise terminal, dating back to World War II up to 1971.  King 5 News has now reported that while a multi-million dollar cleanup at the Seattle Pier has yielded the discovery of ever more military munitions.

The Seattle cruise port was utilized as a military depot during the WWII years and onward and were likely dropped overboard or simply carelessly discarded.  It is believed there is a low risk of explosions, but still a present concern for the cruise terminal.

11 military munitions, 12 rounds of ammo, shell casings, and over 200 other munitions-related items have been salvaged from the water 40 ft below the surface.

While the area is not 100 percent cleared, the cleanup has deemed the pier safe for scheduled cruise season as there is no imminent danger to...

Security Council to Consider Plans for Specialized Somali Courts to Try Pirates

Recognizing the need for further steps to boost anti-piracy efforts, the Security Council today decided to urgently consider the establishment of specialized Somali courts to try suspected pirates both in the Somalia and in the region.

The Council also urged both State and non-State actors affected by piracy, most notably the international shipping community, to provide support for a host of judicial- and detention-related projects through the trust fund set up for that purpose.

In its unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-member Council stressed the need for “a comprehensive response to tackle piracy and its underlying causes by the international community,” as it outlined a wide array of measures to more effectively counter the scourge of piracy.

These include calling on States to cooperate on the issue of hostage-taking; encouraging States and regional organizations to...

Retail Container Traffic to be Up 9 Percent in April

Import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to be up 9 percent in April over the same month last year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“These numbers are an indication that the economy is recovering and retailers are expecting continued increases in sales through the summer and beyond,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “There are challenges ahead from rising prices for gasoline and other essentials, but inventories are under control and retailers are optimistic.”

U.S. ports followed by Global Port Tracker handled 1.1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units in February, traditionally the slowest month of the year and the latest for which actual numbers are available. That was down 8 percent from January but up 10...

Video: Navy Laser Sets Boat on Fire in First Round of Testing

ARLINGTON, Va. — Marking a milestone for the Navy, the Office of Naval Research and its industry partner on April 6 successfully tested a solid-state, high-energy laser (HEL) from a surface ship, which disabled a small target vessel.

The Navy and Northrop Grumman completed at-sea testing of the Maritime Laser Demonstrator (MLD), which validated the potential to provide advanced self-defense for surface ships and personnel by keeping small boat threats at a safe distance.

“The success of this high-energy laser test is a credit to the collaboration, cooperation and teaming of naval labs at Dahlgren, China Lake, Port Hueneme and Point Mugu, Calif.,” said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Nevin Carr. “ONR coordinated each of their unique capabilities into one cohesive effort.”

The latest test occurred near San Nicholas Island, off the coast of Central California in the...

He acknowledged the role of the Italian Coast Guard in rescuing 53 persons.

Reporting on the incident to the in-session Legal Committee, Mr Mitropoulos said: “We were shocked at the number of lives lost and the dreadful circumstances of this disaster.  The victims were fleeing the north coast of Africa in search of a better life in the “promised land” but did not survive to live their dream.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Mr. Munoz,:

It was with interest that I read Challenges for America's East Coast Shipping, Ports and Trade published in the March 30 online edition of The Maritime Executive. By the time I was finished with the column, I was shocked by its inaccuracy.

This is the statement that most surprised me: “Although the port of Savannah announced a $324m project of deepening its channel and basin depth, there is no other East Coast port capable of serving these large vessels…”

To set the record absolutely straight: The Port of Virginia has 50-foot-deep channels and they have been 50 feet deep since spring 2006. Moreover, it is no secret that we have the federal authorization to dredge to 55 feet if necessary; no other US East Coast port has that advantage. Finally and for emphasis, I add that no other US East Coast port can dredge as economically as Virginia can when the need...
